Small wildfire burns in Angeles National Forest |
2006/6/20
A wildfire sparked by a fiery car wreck scorched 25 acres of Angeles National Forest brush and timber Saturday, but high humidity helped firefighters gain the upper hand.
The fire in Dark Canyon in the mountains east of Los Angeles was 80 percent contained and did not threaten any homes, fire spokesman Stanton Florea said.
The nearest community was 2.5 miles away and the fire was holding steady, he said.
About 70 firefighters were "basically going through mop-up," he said.
The fire burned in a steep area of loose rock and fed on pine, juniper, pinion and dry, chest-high brush, he said.
The fire began when a car flew off a mountain road at about 2:15 a.m. and caught fire. The man and woman inside survived with only minor injuries, Florea said.
