THE National Forest Association has embarked on a national commercial tree planting campaign to enhance farmers' incomes and conserve the environment.
"The National Agricultural Advisory Services has supported the programme by advising its service providers to take agro-forestry as a must on the list services they will provide," David Walugembe UFA's secretary general said.
Walugembe said this at a workshop in Hoima and Masindi that was attended by over 200 farmers.
"Tree planting does not only apply to eucalyptus trees but all species. Register your forests and acquire proper documents from district forest offices to avoid disturbances from law enforcement officials when you are harvesting," he said.
Walugembe said agro- forestry also entails maintaining existing trees when clearing the bush for farming.
Frederick Kigenyi, a consultant with Uganda Forest Association, emphasised the need to procure tree seeds from specified outlets to avoid purchasing sub-standards seeds.
Kigenyi is a former assistant commissioner for forests. |
