A 1,000-acre grass fire in Eastland County, near Cisco, caused the temporary evacuation of 40 to 60 houses Sunday afternoon, as federal, state and local crews battled the flames from the air and on the ground, state officials said.
The blaze was one of 22 that the Texas Forest Service responded to in North, South and West Texas on Sunday, said Ludie Ehlers, a spokeswoman for the Forest Service. The largest was in Carson and Hutchinson counties in the Panhandle. That fire scorched 3,000 acres by late afternoon.
No one was injured in any of the fires. Ehlers said fewer than 10 structures were lost.
Closer to the Metroplex, smaller fires in Tarrant, Hunt, Dallas and Parker counties did not destroy any structures and were under control by late afternoon, Ehlers said.
A red flag warning, indicating high fire danger, was in effect for North Texas until 6 p.m. Sunday. At Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, wind gusts neared 40 mph in the afternoon, according to National Weather Service observations.
A fire Saturday in Johnson County destroyed about 75 acres, according to the Joshua Volunteer Fire Department. It also burned one mobile home and another structure, the Fire Department said. |
