Canada announces billion dollar aid package for softwood lumber industry
2005/12/28

TORONTO Canada is offering one-point-two (b) billion dollars in aid for its softwood lumber industry, a move the United States has called disappointing.

Canada's minister of regional economic development (Jacques Saada) says the aid should not harm Canada's case in a long-running trade dispute with the U-S. It alleges the Canadian industry is already subsidized.

On Tuesday, the U-S Commerce Department said it will comply with a NAFTA panel's order to drastically cut U-S duties on imports of Canadian softwood lumber, from an average of about 16 percent to less than one percent.

The Bush administration imposed the tariffs in 2002, accusing Canada of subsidizing its lumber industry.
