Campbellford - Sustainable forestry for private woodlots meeting |
2005/12/2
Upper Canada Woods Co-operative (UCWC) is holding a free information meeting on sustainable forestry at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 10, at the West Seymour Women’s Institute Hall located on Highway 30, just north of Westben, Campbellford. Speakers will discuss sustainable forest management and the benefits of UCWC’s approach. Geoff Schimel, President of Loyalist Forest, will share his experiences about how to make more money from your woodlot by adding value, and Russ Christianson, a Co-op Developer, will talk about the business model for the co-op and why he became a member. UCWC also hopes to learn more about the needs and concerns of woodlot owners in the Campbellford area. All members of the public are welcome to attend. UCWC is a woodlot owners’ management, processing and marketing co-op. UCWC members include farmers and private woodlot owners who promote responsible and sustainable forest practices. With 50 members and growing, the co-op helps manage 8,000 acres of forest. Members’ properties stretch from Rice Lake to the Thousand Islands and comprise a diverse array of forest types and landowner challenges. “Woodlot owners can benefit from learning more about sustainable forest management,” says Chris Lincoln, president of Upper Canada Woods Co-operative. “Upper Canada provides advice and services to help landowners make the right decisions about how or when to harvest timber. “Forest owners are also concerned about income, but, like farmers, they lack power as individuals to improve price,” notes Lincoln, who operates a 40-acre woodlot at Havelock. “Together we can improve income and forest health at the same time,” Upper Canada Woods Co-operative was recently recognized with the New Co-operative of Distinction Award by the Ontario Co-operative Association. UCWC has also recently signed a contract to supply 40,000 board feet of co-op grown and processed lumber over the next three years to a customer in the Niagara Region.
