From Texas to Alabama, the storms have leveled forests as far as fifty miles from the Gulf of Mexico, enough trees to build one million homes. State officials estimate the market value of the downed timber at about 900-million in Louisiana and a whopping 2.4 billion in Mississippi. Forestry experts say there is not enough logging capacity to get it to market in time. Plus, there is a shortage of workers. The prices of wood products are expected to increase with a high demand and short supply. |
