| Tropical log import is decreasing in Japan |

BAt the Timber Conference at the South Sea in Japan it was revised the necessary of tropical logs. In 2004 it is estimated at 1.619.000 cube meters, 14% less than 2003. Logs import for plywood is estimated at 1.443.000 cube meters, 15% less than 2003 while tropical timber import is estimated at 176.000 cube meters, which is 2.4% less than 2003.
Home plywood producers are using softwood for the moment such as Russian larch or Japanese cedar. Tropical timber request is decreasing, especially in house construction industry where hardwood is replaced by PVC products and imported laminated timber
Another increase in plywood prices was announced starting with the end of June. The reason is the increase of raw materials.
The prices for tropical hardwood are increasing, too. Because the import for such products was decreased and there are already concrete orders for panels made of these materials, home producers are very busy. There already are producers who decided to externalize their production: they are sending the raw materials in China where they are processed to be sent back.
Because the increasing prices of the imported plywood, composite panels’ producers were forced to increase the sales price. The adhesives and raw materials prices were increased, for the latter the increase being of 35%. All these resulted in an increase of the finished product price |
