FEDERAL Opposition Leader Mark Latham faces a difficult task appeasing both sides of the forestry debate after arriving in Tasmania for a two-day visit.
Conservationists suggest the volatile issue has the potential to be a litmus test for the Federal election, where Labor is hoping to win crucial preferences from the Australian Greens.
Mr Latham stepped straight into the vexed issue after touching down in Launceston yesterday afternoon, where about 10,000 people had attended a forest industry rally earlier in the day. It comes days after a similar show of strength from environmentalists when more than 10,000 people attended a Wilderness Society rally in Hobart on Saturday, calling for an end to clear-felling of oldgrowth forests and export woodchipping.
