Lima, Aug. 10 (ANDINA). Peru lumber exports may substantially increase to 1.5 billion dollars in the next four-year term, after raising 160 million in 2009, the Peruvian Exporters' Association (Adex) said.
According to the vice-chairman of Adeex’ Lumber Industry Committee, Luis Aguilar, this scenario would be possible if concession contracts are granted and more than ten million hectares of permanent production forests are given under concession.
This would not only increase revenues to the Treasury but enable Peru to compete with Chile, which currently exports nearly 3 billion dollars in wood products, 15 times more than Peru.
"The private sector has conducted studies that prove it is possible to reach this goal, even though exports totaled 219 million dollars in 2008 and 154 million last year, "he said.
