Timber merchant sees 75pc sales boom |
2009/5/11
The worse the recession gets, the better we seem to be doing.
A family-run timber and building merchant has seen a 75pc increase in sales in the last six months - with growth in custom for home and garden improvements outstripping a dip in business from the building trade.
Founded in 1968 with £600, Thaxters of Holt has become a £1.5m turnover business with nine employees.
Director Brian Thaxter said: "The last two years have been quite difficult, but this year we've taken on three new staff since March and we're busier than we've been for three or four years.
"We've been selling lots of decking and things to do with gardening - I go to Sweden to buy it myself, we import our own timber.
"We're doing more retail than building trade now and I think it's all down to price, quality and the service that we give."
Mr Thaxter added: "The worse the recession has got, the better we've got."
More competitive pricing of imported timber from Sweden and Latvia were helping fuel the sales growth, he said.
The Thaxters sold their shed business - part of the company for 41 years - to a former employee two years ago. It has since closed. |
