SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Fire Chief Russell Thompson has yet another hat. He's the town's new forest fire warden.

The Springfield Select Board approved Thompson's appointment to the state position after the resignation of longtime Springfield Fire Chief Ernest Lamphere from the position.

Thompson will work with the Agency of Natural Resources' Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation on any forest fire issues and could be called to adjacent towns in the event of a forest fire, according to Town Manager Robert Forguites.

Another duty of the fire warden is to give permits for any controlled burns, according to Forguites.
